As you walk into Raymond James Stadium, located in the bay of Tampa, you will see a sea of red jerseys and people dressed up as pirates. You will see a life-sized Pirate ship and hear the loyal fans chanting for the team they love. Fans will arrive at the parking lot extra early to ensure they can secure a good tailgating spot and have time to grill their barbecued treats. The "Krewe" is what the loyal fans of the team call themselves, referring to their team's name, the Buccaneers. The team has not always performed well. There were years when they missed the playoffs year after year, but that didn't stop the loyal fan base from being very supportive.
Tailgating
The loyal fans of the Buccaneers waste no time going to the parking lot so they can meet with their fellow Buccaneers fans and get ready. They start off by getting parked and setting up their team flags with the bright red colors to show their support for the team and organization. Once everyone sets up all their tents and gear to tailgate, it's time to start firing up the grills and cooking the assortment of barbecued foods that they eat. Some of the food can be arranged from burgers to hot dogs, and many more delicious foods that they spend time on (2). The fans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are among the most energetic in the entire NFL. That's why they waste no time getting hyped up for the game. They will turn on the speakers and blast hype up music to get ready for the game in the afternoon. They will also get out yard games like cornhole, football, and cup pong (1). Tailgating isn't always about drinking and acting silly; the Krewe tailgates not only to show support but also to meet new people with similar interests.
The cove and the pirate ship
The pirate ship is located in the stadium and plays a vital role on gameday. The ship is in a part of the stadium called the cove, and this part of the stadium is easily one of the most popular around the stadium. No matter what age group there is, it is very popular. The important role it plays is when the buccaneers score a touchdown, the ship will fire its loud cannons, and the crowd will go wild. Fans can go into the ship and watch the game from there on the flat screen TVs in there. Kids mostly go on the ship and pretend they are real pirates on the ship. The ship also serves as a pretty good-looking background while the teams are playing.
Fan chants
The fans are very proud of the team they watch every week, so they will get into the game and make loud chants to get the crowd energized. One of the most popular chants is "fire the cannons," which refers to the pirate ship firing its cannons after the team scores (2). Another popular chant is "Go Bucs," which is repeated multiple times by the crowd, growing louder each time. Dressing up
The fan base takes dressing up and wearing the team's jersey very seriously; whether they are at the game or at a bar watching, they will go all out to show their support for their team. Many fans will wear their jerseys with their favorite player to show their support not only for the team but the player. One of the most popular jersey types is the Buccaneers Creamsicle jersey, which was introduced in 1976, and it represents the struggles the organization went through to build a successful program (6). Another very popular way to show support is to dress up as a pirate to show support for the name "Buccaneers" (2). The fans do this not only to have fun and look cool but to also show their support for the team playing.
