One Direction

"One Band, One Dream, One Direction."

Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson (1)

July 23rd, 2010, five young aspiring stars took to the stage on X-Factor UK as a newly-formed group, taking the world by storm and setting out on an unforeseen journey to become one of the most successful boy bands in the history of music.

Almost immediately, the group caught the eye of pop music lovers and idealistic fangirls, with Tumblr and Twitter groups popping up near instantaneously (2). To further grow their fanbase, the group began filming a series of "video diaries" as they progressed through the show. These videos diaries were a huge hit, anxiously anticipated with each release and still viewed and re-watched to this day.

Although the band's quick popularity played a part in their success during the show, in the end, One Direction placed third. This ranking clearly underscored the all-consuming fame the teens were about to face in their very near future (3).

The Fanbase

Simon Cowell, X-Factor judge and original orchestrator of the band's formation, remarks when reflecting back on One Direction's overnight fame that "fans, not a record label, [were the ones] marketing and promoting [the] band worldwide" (4). This is likely what scored them their rapid success - the fans were behind the scenes in every aspect, from stretching the group's reach across the internet and accessing countries across the globe, feeding into the craze that surrounds boy bands and using it as a ploy for notoriety to be achieved, to networking across social medias to create fandom groups at a scale never before seen. Fans took this new obsession seriously, with seemingly sarcastic but ultimately truthful comments being made in hindsight such as "I sent like 16,000 tweets" regarding the band's initial announcement of their goal of pursuing music (4).

One Direction and their Directioners

Since the fanbase was so extensively online, a large majority of fan interaction (note: a majority, not exclusively) happened on social media. Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram... all of these platforms accelerated the growth and influence of One Direction significantly due to their steady stream of interaction with the fandom. Thanks to One Directioners, "stan Twitter" has been around for close to a decade and a half and doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. One of their most fundamental ways of talking to their fans was through live-streaming and Twitcam, keeping themselves relevant in the most important spaces and allowing the fans to do the work in promoting their music, music videos, and events (2).

Fandom Activities

The fandom's ways of celebrating their favorite band range from a variety of well-known activities, including (but not limited to) stan accounts, frequenting concerts, fanart and fan fiction creation, and the expression of true, resounding heartbreak when band member Zayn Malik left indefinitely. Some stan accounts during One Direction's peak bout of fame reached almost 200,000 followers (5), uniting fans in idolizing those who deemed themselves their fave's "biggest fan." Furthermore, several fans dedicated themselves to attending as many of the band's live shows as possible, spending exorbitant amounts of money in the process in the name of and love for the game.

Several forms of fanart began to pop up, most notably in the shape of fan fiction. Stretching across Tumblr, Fanfiction.net, Wattpad, and Archive of Our Own, fans took to writing along a number of plot lines. Even today, these writing platforms are thriving with new content arising every hour.

The End

The end of One Direction began after Zayn Malik made the announcement of his leaving the band, with fans feeling the utmost despair at such a proclamation. Only a year later did the band announce its indefinite hiatus, with the members going on to pursue solo careers in the following years after the group's disband. The five years of dedication Directioners devoted to the musicians ultimately amounted to mere memories, the enjoyment of being part of such a vibrant and lively community dying down almost as quickly as it arose. Those who had partook in such fandom groups look back on their time as fangirls fondly, cementing themselves as the backbone of stan Twitter and having wondrously been involved in one of the greatest fandom groups of all time.
