Nursing Student -Jenna Kaufman

Did you know that only thirty percent of nursing majors are also student athletes at Bloomsburg University? With that being said an athlete that is also majoring in nursing needs to have a great work ethic. Alizabeth Schuler has that determination and grit to be able to balance her lifestyle, being a new member to the nursing program here at Bloomsburg. Alizabeth was inspired to study nursing because her three older sisters are nurses. "I am interested in becoming a pediatric nurse because I love working with little kids and want to make an impact on their lives." To achieve that goal in the future she is looking at about ten years of schooling. Alizabeth is in a four year program for her undergraduate degree right now but will going for her masters.

Alizabeth is also a student athlete on top of being a in the during program. Her day consists of classes that start at eight and go to twelve. Not long after she goes to softball practice for about three hours a day, where she uses this time to clear her mind of her busy schedule.

Alizabeth states "Staying balanced can be tricky some times but I never push my limits, I listen to my body and what it is telling me to do."

When you throw socializing into play this makes it hard to stay on task even if you are studying or not. Living the dorm there are always people hanging out in friends rooms or in the big lounge. For Alizabeth "she likes to take her work into a social environment to be able to bounce ideas off of her peers and even use them as models for anatomy."

While she's in a social environment, she usually lays on her stomach with her head being propped up with her hand. On a gray cozy carpet in her neighbor's room which she said "I love laying on that carpet". Surrounded by people, chattering at a low volume with a warm light coming from the glass lap in the corner of the room. There is also a tint to pink coming from the leds surrounding her. Alizabeth would call this her down time from all her activities while she works on her anatomy homework. Most people may think that anatomy is a very hard course to take but for Alizabeth "Chemistry is the most challenging class because it's an hour and fifteen minutes and my professor talks super fast because they are trying to fit two semesters into one". With that class being as fast as Alizabeth determination she may feel that she has to teach herself some of the class content.
On top of a busy schedule the nursing students will have to collect a total of community service hours along with her clinical starting up in the fall of next year. Alizabeth is little worried about starting her clinical and balancing softball. Two upper classmate that were in her shoes last year knew how worried she was and said "Alizabeth will be just fine starting her clinical because coach Susan understands a busy schedule and is very flexible with schooling".

Alizabeth has also spent all summer working night shifts at a local hospital by her house. Which helps give her more experience in the hospital where " I check vitals, bleed sugar, answer call bells, get ready for admissions, and take care of patients all through the night".

With all that being said, a nursing student should not feel anxious or alone about there years in college, although they have a very demanding schedule and workload they have a ton of resources to lean on for help. College will help prepare them for their future job in the medical field.
